“Cicadas sound like Summer”

Sometimes you don’t realize all the layered subtleties in a memory until much, much later. When I was a kid my mom would take us to Aunt Jean’s pool on hot summer days. It was heaven: miles of countryside, pool-side meals of cantaloupe, pigs-in-a-blanket & pineapple juice, and, of course, the POOL. It wasn’t until recently, though, that I realized a more subtle & sensory part of these memories from those clear, hot days: the smell of the sundrenched boxwood bushes in front of her house with the buzz of cicadas emanating from them. This painting is actually of Sea Almond bushes, but as I painted, the soothing sound of cicadas in the boxwoods came to me & I was back at Aunt Jean’s beautiful, old house in the country. These sounds & smells were the subtle backdrop of childhood summers.
